2 Days Boat Trip Luang Namtha-Houay Xai “Laos-Thai Border”

Trip Overview

On this tour down the river you can watch cotton weaving, bamboo paper making, and the fascinating minority lifestyles. The boat travels through beautiful nature along the border of the Nam Ha National Protected Area and stunning limestone scenery. You will stay overnight at a Tai Lue homestay and enjoy local style picnics. Note: the trip is possible between July-January.

Itinerary

Day 1: Luang Namtha-Ban Khon Kham. Approx. 6-7 hours
Depart from Luang Namtha by local boat (July-Jan) or opt minivan, bike depending on what you have chosen; on this trip you have the opportunity to discover villages of the minorities such as: Tai Dam, Khmu and Tai Lue. You will be able to see cotton weaving, bamboo paper making (especially during the dry season) and the Nam Ha National Protected Area along the Nam Tha River on your right for about 90 km. On this tour, you will stay in the village of the boatmen or tourist house in Ban Khon Kham.

Ban Khon Kham they are Tai Lue village, located on the bank of Nam Tha River far from the Nalae town around one and half hours by boat, from Luang Namtha 6 hours, most house (women) working with handicraft by their style for selling to tourists and Luang Namtha markets, the village don’t have electricity, more than 20 boats man major experience in Nam Tha River and they are still very traditional and enjoy a boat ride down to the Mekong River on one of the most beautiful stretches of the river.

Remark: For the months July- Jan the boat will continue down river after a short stop to see villages on the bank of Nam Tha River. Lunch will be a local food picnic along the river. Going down river the boats will pass the Nam Ha National Protected Area and several small but exciting rapids along the way. You will arrive at the Nalae town around 3-4 PM.

Day 2: Ban Khon Kham-Houay Xai “Lao-Thai Border”. Approx. 7-8 hours
Start as early as possible the journey by slow boat takes 8-9 hours. On the tour you will enjoy the beautiful nature, exciting views of limestone rocks, and the fascinating minority lifestyles along the bank of the Nam Tha River. Please be on the lookout for bird species, lizards or turtles lying on the banks of the Nam Tha River. The journey finishes around 4 PM to allow you to cross the border if you so wish (the border closes at 6 PM).

Note: For reason of comfort and safety, the passenger load on the boats is calculated at 7 persons per boat. During high water (July-November), the boats may take as many as 9 persons. However, this may not be very comfortable. In the dry season due to low water (December-January), it is recommended that there not be more than 6 persons per boat.
