Khmu & Lanten Ethnic Experience 3-Day Trek in Nam Ha NPA
Trip Overview:
Experience an exciting 3-day trek through Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA) with stunning jungle scenery. Enjoy a challenging hike guided by expert forest guides, who will teach you about indigenous lifestyles, medicinal plants, animal habits, and jungle survival skills. The trek includes visits to Khmu and Lanten minority villages, and an overnight stay in their homestays. Immerse yourself in local culture, traditions, and community activities.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Doiluckkham to Nalan Village – Approx. 4-5 hours
Start the trek at Doiluckkham, about 20 km from Luang Namtha town. The trail ascends through 20–30-year-old secondary forest into the upland rainforest of Nam Ha NPA, offering great views from a ridge before re-entering the forest. Enjoy a Lao-style picnic lunch in the cool upland forest or a thatched farmer’s hut. Continue hiking for 2-3 hours under old-growth trees, arriving at the village before sunset. After checking into your homestay, explore the village and learn about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions. Enjoy a local dinner followed by community tourism activities.
Day 2: Ban Nalan to Ban Namkhoi – Approx. 5-6 hours
Start the day with breakfast and a bamboo cup of coffee, then hike through a tea garden into the jungle. Enjoy a valley view from a viewpoint before heading to the lunch site, where your guide will prepare Lao food (weather permitting). After lunch, trek through the jungle to observe nature, wildlife footprints, and traditional medicinal plants, all explained by the guides. At Namkhoi village, experience the Lanten tribe’s primitive lifestyle, unique culture, housing, clothing, and language. See handmade handicrafts, which you can buy as souvenirs. Before dinner, your guide will recommend places to bathe and stay. Enjoy dinner and community activities in the evening.
Day 3: Ban Namkhoi to Ban Namlue – Approx. 5-6 hours
After breakfast, follow the Nam Ha River, passing through Khmu and Lanten minority areas. The Lanten still wear traditional clothes, make textiles, dye clothes naturally, and produce bamboo paper (seasonally). After lunch and a village visit, trek up a steep hill in the jungle, offering beautiful forests and landscapes. The final descent passes upland cultivated areas tended by Namlue villagers. The trail steepens and can be slippery after rain. End the trek and return to Luang Namtha in the afternoon by Tuk Tuk or van.
